AIC College of Design students take home nine Gold and Silver 2011 Addy Awards

October 12th, 2011 by admin

Seven second-year students from the AIC College of Design in Sharonville, Ohio recently received nine Student Addy Awards in honor of creative excellence in advertising and graphic design. The 2011 Addy Award ceremony was held on February 19 at The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center in Covington, KY, with entries judged by professionals in the advertising field.

Competing with fellow art students from the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati State, and Gateway Community and Technical College, AIC students have always had a solid success in the event, last year winning a national Addy award.

This year AIC students surpassed their previous local record by garnering two more awards in the competition than they had achieved in 2010.

The AIC student winners include Michael Turner, who won a Gold ADDY for his piece on US currency. “My winning entry was a fun project in class,” Michael comments. “We were assigned to redesign US currency, so I put in a lot of time and research into what makes the current currency so great.” Michael is working at Egleston-Maynard Sports in Covington as a lead graphic designer and also finding time to do a little freelance.

AIC graduate Chelcie Lytle was excited to win a Silver ADDY for her print magazine cover. She is currently working on a painting of Jim Morrison in oil, a piece called “Ode to Jim” requested by some close friends.

Another graduate, Sabrina Mcintosh, created a Silver Addy-winning submission in non-traditional advertising entitled “Preffee Coffee” (Preffee is a combination of the words “perfect” and “coffee”). “The assignment was corporate identity and coming up with our own company,” Sabrina says. “I’m a huge fan of coffee so naturally I created a coffee company.” Sabrina is employed at Macy’s in Florence, KY, creating freelance fine art, and assembling the equipment she needs to be successful at freelance graphic design.

The complete list of AIC winners is as follows:

GOLD

• Adam Downs, Giro d’Italia (Editorial Spread)

• Laura Martin, Yellow River (Interactive Website)

• Tyrese Patterson, Oni Vodka (Packaging)

• Michael Turner, US Currency (Currency)

SILVER

• Alex Danker, Print Magazine (Cover)

• Chelcie Lytle, Print Magazine (Cover)

• Sabrina McIntosh, Preffee Coffee (Non-traditional Advertising)

• Laura Martin, Quicksilver (Magazine Campaign)

• Tyrese Patterson, Oni Vodka (Interactive Website)

Student Gold Addy award winners locally are automatically entered in the recently-held district competition including colleges and universities in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Silver award winners may compete at the district level if they wish.

Marion K. Allman, CEO and co-founder of the AIC College of Design, is proud of the students’ achievements. “This is proof that our focused curriculum and small class sizes give students the foundation they need to be successful and compete in the professional world,” she observed.

Mayor Mallory Visits AIC

November 2nd, 2010 by admin

Mayor Mallory visits the English class of Barbara Morgenstern at The AIC College of Design.

At the invitation of The AIC College of Design’s second year student, Jake Gerth, Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory met with students in Barbara Morgenstern’s English class last week. The 2-year art school is located in Tri-County and offers an associate degree in graphic design.

Asked by student Stacey Remington whether Mallory supported the arts, he joked, “I was a victim of the arts.” His mother regularly dragged him and his five siblings to cultural events, he said, and he indeed is a great supporter of the arts.

Mallory confided that, as the youngest child in a Cincinnati political dynasty he had no choice but to go into politics. His father was the former Ohio House Majority Leader, his brother Dale now serves in the House, two brothers are judges, and another is the former mayor of Forest Park. His sister has also been involved in community service.

The proposed Cincinnati Streetcar Line in downtown Cincinnati will encourage economic development along its path, Mallory anticipates. When asked by student Christian Witt about high unemployment in the city, the mayor urged patience as the economy rebounds from a deep recession. He explained that business owners typically hire employees last, preferring to first rebuild cash reserves.

Instructor Morgenstern assigned the mayor the same homework given to her English students—to create a list of the “25 Things I Want to Do Before It’s Too Late.” Mallory said that his list includes skydiving but confessed that he will never take the leap.

Nothing Ordinary At AIC

September 15th, 2010 by admin

Mark Gilsdorf

Mark Gilsdorf

First day of class today, and most students would expect the usual introduction course with the expected long lecture…the ordinary.

Well not at AIC , the first day of class, first year students have been involved in a real life project. The illustration of 100 different birthday cards, from age 1 to 100! The extraordinary!

The project is conducted by Jeanette Ramirez, also known as the “Limerick lady” by second year students. Jeanette has been involved with AIC for 3 years and has, with the collaboration of AIC students, published 2 limerick books. This is her third project involving our students.

There is a lot to be said about having a actual printed piece in your portfolio, that could be the little plus you needed to get that dream job.

We are really excited about this project’s outcome and will keep you posted.
